Arbitrum (ARB)
Arbitrum (ARB) is a Layer-2 scaling solution for Ethereum designed to improve transaction speed, reduce fees, and expand network capacity while maintaining Ethereum’s security guarantees. It achieves this through Optimistic Rollup technology, which processes transactions off-chain before settling them on Ethereum.
Developed by Offchain Labs, Arbitrum was created to address Ethereum’s scalability constraints — particularly congestion and high gas costs during peak usage. By moving computation and transaction execution to Layer-2, Arbitrum significantly increases throughput while lowering costs for users and developers.
At the core of Arbitrum’s design are Optimistic Rollups. Transactions are bundled (“rolled up”) and submitted to Ethereum as compressed data. The system assumes transactions are valid by default but allows challenges within a dispute window if fraudulent activity is suspected. This model preserves security while improving efficiency.
Arbitrum is fully compatible with the Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM), enabling developers to deploy existing Ethereum smart contracts with minimal or no code changes. This compatibility accelerated ecosystem growth and simplified migration for DeFi and Web3 projects.
The network supports a wide range of applications, including:
- Decentralized finance (DeFi) protocols
- NFT marketplaces
- Gaming platforms
- DAO infrastructure
The native token ARB serves as a governance token within the Arbitrum DAO. Holders can vote on protocol upgrades, treasury allocations, and ecosystem development initiatives. Transaction fees on the network are paid in ETH rather than ARB.
Arbitrum’s architecture includes multiple chains, such as Arbitrum One for general applications and Arbitrum Nova for high-throughput, low-cost use cases like gaming and social applications.
By combining Ethereum security with Layer-2 scalability, Arbitrum has become one of the leading rollup ecosystems in the Web3 landscape.
In summary, Arbitrum functions as a high-efficiency scaling layer that enables faster, cheaper Ethereum transactions while preserving decentralization and developer flexibility.
