EigenLayer (EIGEN)

EigenLayer (EIGEN) is a restaking protocol built on Ethereum that allows users to reuse their staked ETH to secure additional decentralized services beyond the Ethereum base layer. It introduces a new cryptoeconomic model designed to extend Ethereum’s security to external protocols.

Traditionally, ETH stakers secure only the Ethereum network. EigenLayer enables “restaking,” meaning staked ETH (or liquid staking tokens such as stETH) can be opt-in delegated to additional systems known as Actively Validated Services (AVSs).

AVSs may include:

The core concept of EigenLayer is shared security. Validators who choose to restake commit additional responsibilities and can earn extra rewards. However, they also accept additional slashing risks if they fail to perform duties correctly.

The EIGEN token plays a governance and coordination role within the ecosystem. It is used for:
