Ethereum Classic (ETC)
Ethereum Classic (ETC) is a decentralized Layer-1 blockchain that preserves the original Ethereum ledger and philosophy following the 2016 DAO hard fork. It operates as an independent network focused on immutability, censorship resistance, and Proof-of-Work security.
The split between Ethereum and Ethereum Classic occurred after the DAO hack in 2016, where a vulnerability in a smart contract led to the loss of millions of dollars worth of ETH. The Ethereum community voted to implement a hard fork to reverse the exploit and restore funds. However, a portion of the community opposed altering the blockchain’s history, arguing that “code is law.”
This ideological divide resulted in two separate chains:
- Ethereum (ETH) – The forked chain that reversed the hack
- Ethereum Classic (ETC) – The original chain that preserved the unaltered ledger
Ethereum Classic continues to operate using a Proof-of-Work consensus mechanism. Miners validate transactions and secure the network, maintaining a model similar to early Ethereum and Bitcoin security structures.
ETC supports smart contracts and decentralized applications, using the Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM). This allows developers to deploy Solidity-based applications, although ecosystem activity is smaller compared to Ethereum’s main chain.
The ETC token is used for:
- Paying transaction and smart contract execution fees
- Mining rewards
- Value transfer within the Ethereum Classic ecosystem
A defining principle of Ethereum Classic is immutability. The network emphasizes that blockchain transactions should never be altered, regardless of external circumstances, reinforcing its commitment to decentralization and censorship resistance.
While Ethereum has transitioned to Proof-of-Stake, Ethereum Classic remains one of the largest Proof-of-Work smart contract platforms. It has attracted miners migrating from Ethereum after the consensus shift.
In summary, Ethereum Classic represents the continuation of Ethereum’s original chain, prioritizing immutability, Proof-of-Work security, and ideological adherence to blockchain permanence.
