Filecoin (FIL)

Filecoin (FIL) is a decentralized storage network designed to create an open marketplace for digital data storage. Built on top of the InterPlanetary File System (IPFS), Filecoin enables users to rent out unused storage space or purchase decentralized storage services without relying on centralized cloud providers.

Launched by Protocol Labs, Filecoin aims to transform data storage into a blockchain-based economy. Instead of storing files on centralized servers controlled by a single company, data is distributed across a global network of independent storage providers.

Filecoin operates through a Proof-of-Storage model that includes:

These cryptographic proofs ensure that storage providers fulfill their contractual obligations and maintain data integrity.

Users pay storage providers in FIL tokens to store data. Providers earn FIL by offering storage capacity and proving they are reliably maintaining stored files. The system also includes retrieval miners who optimize fast data access for users.

FIL serves multiple functions:

• Payment for storage and retrieval services
• Collateral for storage providers
• Incentives for maintaining network reliability

The Filecoin network supports Web3 applications, decentralized websites, NFT metadata storage, enterprise archiving, and long-term data preservation.
