Internet Computer (ICP)

Internet Computer (ICP) is a Layer-1 blockchain protocol designed to extend the public internet with native smart contract functionality. Its goal is to enable fully decentralized applications that run directly on-chain without relying on traditional cloud infrastructure.

Developed by the DFINITY Foundation, the Internet Computer aims to transform blockchain from a financial settlement layer into a global computing platform. Unlike most networks that focus primarily on token transfers and DeFi, ICP is designed to host entire web applications, backend services, and enterprise systems directly on its blockchain.

A central innovation of the Internet Computer is its use of canister smart contracts. Canisters combine code and data into scalable units that can process requests and store information efficiently. These canisters are capable of serving web content directly to users, eliminating the need for centralized servers.

The network operates through a unique consensus mechanism that integrates cryptography, chain-key technology, and decentralized node providers. Chain-key cryptography enables the entire network to have a single public key, allowing smart contracts to verify data and interact with external systems efficiently.

One of ICP’s major differentiators is its ambition to support fully decentralized social networks, enterprise platforms, DeFi applications, and AI-driven services — all running entirely on-chain.

The ICP token serves several functions:

• Payment for computational resources (“cycles”)
• Staking within the Network Nervous System (NNS) governance model
• Participation in protocol upgrades and network decisions

The governance system, called the Network Nervous System, allows token holders to lock ICP into “neurons” and vote on proposals affecting network parameters and development.

By aiming to replace traditional cloud services with decentralized infrastructure, the Internet Computer positions itself as a blockchain-based alternative to centralized web hosting providers.
