Optimism (OP)

Optimism (OP) is a Layer-2 scaling solution for Ethereum designed to increase transaction throughput and reduce gas fees while inheriting the security of the Ethereum mainnet. It achieves this through Optimistic Rollup technology, enabling faster and more cost-efficient decentralized applications.

Optimism processes transactions off-chain and periodically submits compressed transaction data back to Ethereum. These bundled transactions are assumed to be valid by default — hence the term “optimistic.” If fraud is suspected, a challenge mechanism allows disputed transactions to be verified on-chain.

Because Optimism is fully compatible with the Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM), developers can deploy existing Ethereum smart contracts with minimal modification. This compatibility has made Optimism a key infrastructure layer for DeFi protocols, NFT platforms, and DAO ecosystems.

The network is part of the broader OP Stack, a modular framework designed to enable the creation of interoperable Layer-2 chains. This vision supports the concept of a “Superchain,” where multiple rollups share common security and communication standards.

The native token OP serves governance functions within the Optimism Collective. Token holders participate in voting on protocol upgrades, treasury allocations, and ecosystem funding initiatives. Governance is structured through a bicameral model involving both token holders and citizen representatives.
