THORChain (RUNE)

THORChain (RUNE) is a decentralized liquidity protocol designed to enable cross-chain asset swaps without relying on centralized exchanges or wrapped tokens. It allows users to trade native assets — such as Bitcoin and Ethereum — directly across different blockchains in a permissionless environment.

Built using the Cosmos SDK and powered by a Proof-of-Stake consensus mechanism, THORChain focuses on interoperability and decentralized liquidity provisioning. Validators secure the network by bonding RUNE tokens, aligning economic incentives with network integrity.

At the core of THORChain’s architecture are liquidity pools that pair external assets with RUNE. For example, BTC is paired with RUNE, and ETH is paired with RUNE. When users swap between assets (e.g., BTC to ETH), the protocol routes the trade through RUNE as the settlement intermediary.

This design enables:

Liquidity providers deposit assets into pools and earn trading fees and protocol incentives in return. However, they are also exposed to impermanent loss risks.
